The Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) – formerly the Department of Agriculture – rangeland survey project provides mapping and essential biophysical resource information on geomorphology, vegetation, land condition, carrying capacities and recommendations for management of rangeland landscapes.

Over the past decade DPIRD has been undertaking a rangeland survey in the Southern Goldfields / Great Western Woodlands area. The majority of the Great Western Woodlands is included within this survey. This is the second last baseline survey of rangeland pastoral resources in WA. With its completion near complete state-wide coverage of all land presently held under pastoral lease tenure at a land system scale will be achieved.  This survey area adjoins with previous DPIRD rangeland surveys such as the Western Nullarbor, North-eastern Goldfields and Sandstone-Yalgoo-Paynes Find and soil-landscape surveys in the agricultural area. As the survey near completion over 156 000 Km2 of the Southern Goldfields / Great Western Woodlands survey area has been mapped to a land system scale (1:50,000). The publication of the accompanying technical bulletin is planned for the end of 2021.
